As Kendall County confronts escalating growth and public safety demands, County Judge candidate Ricky Gleason is proposing a transformative approach to leadership that prioritizes resident input and treats county government as a collaborative partner. Gleason cites Comfort Vision 2050, a community-developed roadmap, as evidence that ground-up planning yields effective results. This plan, crafted by Comfort residents across various generations and professions, emphasizes decentralized decision-making, transparency, and coordination—principles Gleason insists should define county governance. "At its best, county government should be a partner to its citizens—not an adversary," Gleason stated. "The County Judge sets the tone. That tone should bring people together, not push them apart."
Gleason's platform is built on proactive engagement with residents, first responders, businesses, school districts, and municipalities. He views leadership as creating an environment where local initiatives can flourish, particularly in key areas such as road and bridge planning, emergency management, fire and EMS services, and economic development. Kendall County currently lacks a cohesive strategic vision despite mounting pressures from population growth, environmental risks like flash floods and wildfires, and overburdened infrastructure. Gleason contends that the County Judge must act as a convener, aligning stakeholders and ensuring that innovation occurs collaboratively with the community rather than being imposed upon it. "Leadership starts with service," Gleason added. "It means listening first, communicating clearly, and remembering that authority exists to help people succeed - not to control them."
Although Comfort Vision 2050 is specific to one community, Gleason regards it as a "proof of concept" for engaged, resident-led planning. The process demonstrated that when citizens are included in discussions, they effectively identify shared priorities and practical solutions. This approach, Gleason argues, can strengthen the entire county by fostering unity and efficiency. "A unified county is a stronger county," Gleason stated. "When government works alongside its people, we solve problems faster, make better decisions, and preserve what makes Kendall County special." The emphasis on listening and coordination addresses immediate challenges while aiming to sustain the community's character amid development. Gleason's advocacy for this model highlights its potential to enhance public safety, infrastructure resilience, and economic vitality through inclusive governance.
