HR.com's 2026 Hot Topics Survey reveals a landmark shift in human resources priorities, with artificial intelligence emerging as the top concern for the first time, cited by 36% of respondents as critical for the coming year. The annual poll tracking global HR professional priorities shows AI has moved from #22 in 2023 to the #1 position in 2026, indicating the experimental phase has ended and organizations are now focused on full-scale implementation. This represents a significant change from 2025 when AI ranked #3 and 2024 when it ranked #9, suggesting accelerated adoption across the industry.
According to Debbie McGrath, CEO of HR.com, HR can no longer afford to backburner AI as it affects virtually every HR function and will transform how most white-collar work is performed. The rise of effective agentic AI means HR must consider not only how AI affects its own work but also how work is performed throughout entire organizations. This shift places AI well above the second-ranked issue, Leadership Development, at 27%, as organizations look to scale both HR productivity and overall workforce productivity.
The survey data suggests HR professionals are increasingly being asked to act as "Human-Technology Integration Specialists" alongside traditional roles. The simultaneous rise of Performance Management to the #3 spot at 26% indicates growing dissatisfaction with legacy review systems and a move toward real-time feedback loops using new AI technologies. Leadership Development has moved to #2 after holding the top spot in 2025, with organizations pivoting from general leadership training to specialized management of hybrid and AI-augmented teams.
Employee Retention has stabilized at #5 with 24% of respondents citing it as a priority, down from a peak of 63% during the 2022 "Great Resignation" era, suggesting a return to a more stable labor market. Legal and compliance issues rose to #6 at 22%, likely driven by new US administration policies and global regulations surrounding AI ethics, data privacy, and changing labor laws. The implications for the profession suggest "buyer intent" in 2026 will be heavily weighted toward software replacement and automation tools that can demonstrate clear return on investment.
