Top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella sees the value of AI, but recognizes that while AI can produce, it cannot lead. He believes the future still belongs to leaders who lead with humanity. In a recent newsletter he wrote in part: "AI is everywhere in our headlines, our boardrooms, our classrooms, and our conversations. It is reshaping industries, accelerating decisions, and redefining how work gets done. But for all its power, AI still lacks the two things that have always moved people, teams, and organizations forward: A heart. And a soul."
Romanella, founder and CEO of 3SIXTY Management Services, created a keynote titled "The Heart and Soul of AI" to remind leaders that people, not algorithms, are the true engine of progress. He challenges leaders to recommit to their people, purpose, and values. The keynote introduces an internal operating system called AIAI — "Am I All In?" — which leaders need when AI handles the tactical and humans must elevate the strategic.
Romanella emphasizes that AI can analyze data, generate options, and automate tasks, but it cannot create meaning, generate belief, or build trust. He draws on a personal story: when asked which of their children was her favorite, his wife Debbie replied, "They all are, because everyone gets what they need when they need it." Romanella says this moment reshaped his leadership approach, highlighting the importance of understanding people as individuals.
With over four decades of experience, including nearly 40 years at UPS and roles as CEO and director, Romanella offers a perspective shaped by witnessing major technological shifts. He notes that technology changes the work, but leadership must still lift the people. "A generation entering the workforce is waiting for AI to define them — stuck between what AI is and what AI isn't," he writes. "That paralysis convinces people to wait instead of act, to fear instead of grow, and to surrender control of their future instead of owning it."
Romanella's resources include a collection of Forbes articles, a podcast called The Leadership Library Podcast now in its 9th season, and his book 'Tighten The Lug Nuts: The Principles Of Balanced Leadership', which achieved number 1 bestseller status in Business Management and Business Leadership. The book offers practical concepts for leaders at any level, including parents and educators.
Romanella's keynote introduces three questions every leader must master in the AI era: 1) What is the issue or opportunity? 2) How do I get my team aligned and committed? 3) How do I turn intent into business results? He argues these questions form the backbone of strategic leadership when AI can analyze information but only leaders can create meaning.
Romanella is available for keynote speaking engagements and media interviews. More information on his keynote, book, and resources can be found at 3SIXTY Management Services and TightenTheLugNuts.com.
