For over a decade, the United in Peace Foundation has been organizing monthly Peace Rides through communities in Los Angeles, aiming to bridge divides and foster unity. These events are more than just processions of motorcycles and automobiles; they are deliberate efforts to engage residents, encourage dialogue, and challenge perceptions that separate neighborhoods, cultures, races, and faiths.
The rides bring together a diverse coalition including bikers, low-riders, clergy, community leaders, and members of car and motorcycle clubs. Participants travel through areas that have experienced violence or division, distributing peace-oriented materials such as The Way to Happiness booklet and the Million Man March pledge. The simple yet powerful goal is to help people see one another as members of the same community and to promote understanding, respect, and cooperation.
At the conclusion of each ride, a Peace Festival is held, where residents and participants gather to celebrate. The festivals feature professional performers in hip-hop, R&B, and gospel, along with local talent. The organization describes this approach as "edutainment"—combining education, community engagement, and entertainment to create an environment conducive to connection and dialogue.
The Peace Rides have received support from the Los Angeles Police Department, which assists with safety along designated routes. Residents often come out of their homes to wave and show support, indicating the growing familiarity and acceptance of the rides within the communities they visit.
Over the past 14 years, United in Peace has distributed more than 70,000 copies of The Way to Happiness booklets and the Million Man March pledge, reaching over 2.4 million people through events and media coverage. The organization points to encouraging changes in violence rates, citing an LAPD captain who noted that violent death rates in South Los Angeles have decreased by as much as 40% over the same period. While many factors contribute to these declines, United in Peace believes its sustained efforts play a meaningful role.
Mayors and members of Congress have issued commendations and proclamations recognizing the organization's contributions to peace and violence reduction. United in Peace welcomes community groups, congregations, civic leaders, and individuals who share a commitment to building safer, more connected communities. Nonprofit organizations may apply to host informational booths at the monthly Peace Festivals.
The Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International has been a long-time supporter, providing The Way to Happiness booklets, written by L. Ron Hubbard. The booklets are available at thewaytohappiness.org.
